Pop Artist Scotty Berg Talks His New Single ‘It Ain’t Over’ & More!

(Last Updated On: May 19, 2021)

WAEN spoke to #NextGen 14 year-old pop artist and TikToker, Scotty Berg. The young singer-songwriter is from Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. His latest single It Ain’t Over was released last month and was heavily inspired by the pandemic. In the midst of such a taxing time more than anything, Scotty wanted to tell stories about helping people and people lifting each other up. He was focused on writing a song that highlighted “all the good that came through during all this.” Scotty was also recently nominated for the City of Kelowna Civic Award for Teen Honour in the Arts, which recognized his charitable donations to organizations by raising money through his performances.

Hi Scotty! Thanks so much for the chance to interview you! Like we always say there is no better place to start than at the beginning. How old were you when you discovered you wanted to be a musical artist?

I always sang and hummed around the house and at school when I was little, but probably when I was 9 years old. I had the chance to perform in some rock shows that my music school put on in front of 1000 people. I got to be a back-up singer and LOVED being on stage.

I always think just being on stage must be such an awesome feeling! What about songwriting? How did you become interested in that? Do you co-write with other people?

I would just go and write stuff down that I was feeling or thinking about. Then, I would take it to someone to help with the melodies and to change or add some lyrics.  I have a friend/mentor named Justin Moore who has really helped me. He helped with some of the lyrics for my latest single It Ain’t Over.

Sounds great! If you could collaborate with anybody who would it be?

Right now, probably Bruno Mars. His voice is amazing and he is a great entertainer. He also seems really nice!

Love Bruno Mars! Who are some of your other favorite musical artists?

Fellow Canadians Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes. I also really like Ed Sheeran and some classic Queen is pretty awesome too!

Your new single, It Ain’t Over, you wrote and recorded during the pandemic. What else can you tell us.

I have a few songs. I Wouldn’t Know What to Do was released a few years ago. In April this year, I released It Ain’t Over. The song came about because of COVID-19. I was bored and at home, so I just started writing stuff down. I kept hearing and reading how negative things were and I just wanted to write something more positive. So, the song is really about helping someone when they need it, and that people can be there for each other. It has been very well received on streaming platforms.

You were nominated for the City of Kelowna Civic Award for Teen Honour in the Arts in relation to your charitable work and donations. Of course, we want to know more!

This is something that my parents helped me with. As a family, we have a really good life and they suggested I use my talent to give back. I have sung for a few non-profit fundraisers which focused on youth mental health, and family support. I have also sung and donated money to mental health organizations. Then last summer, I organized 3 days of busking downtown where I donated all of the money. I had other musicians sing as well. Overall, I raised about $3,000 for local non-profit organizations.

Fantastic! Scotty, when you dream about your future what do you see?

I see myself on stage, sold-out arenas, rocking it out and loving every minute of it! I am super excited to say that I am part of Circle11 Entertainment, which is a management and publishing company based out of Nashville, L.A., and New York. It is a great fit. The plan is for me to go to Nashville to record and work with Grammy-nominated writers and producers. I can’t wait to get started! In Kelowna, I have some gigs lined up for the summer. I am also in track and field; play basketball and golf and love mountain bike riding. I keep super busy and love being with my friends and family.
